Men's Basketball Stopped By Stonehill, 67-64

Easton, MA - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Easton, Massachusetts to take on The Skyhawks of Stonehill College in a conference clash. Despite trailing by 11 at the half, the Panthers pulled to within one point in the final 96 seconds, before finally falling, 67-64. With the loss Adelphi slips to 10-7 overall and 6-7 in the NE-10, while Stonehill improves to 14-4 and 9-4 in conference.

Richard Byrd led four Panthers in double figures with 15 points and four assists. David Akinyooye chipped in a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Chris Ranglin added 14 points and five rebounds and Rob Johnson contributed 13 points and six rebounds.

Adelphi, trailing by three with 2:04 left, used a Byrd lay-up to cut the margin to just one point, 65-64 with 1:36 left on the clock. The two teams then traded empty possessions before the Skyhawks grabbed an offensive rebound, scored on a put back with just 11 ticks left on the clock to take a three point lead, 67-64.

The Panthers called a time out with seven seconds on the clock and set up a play, giving Byrd a good look at a game tying triple, but his attempt with six seconds left was off the mark, giving Stonehill a three-point victory, 67-64.

Adelphi and Stonehill traded baskets in the first four minutes of play, giving the host Skyhawks a one point edge, 10-9 with 16:02 remaining in the first half. Stonehill used a 7-0 spurt to take a 17-9 edge, but the Panthers responded with a quick 6-0 run to cut the margin to just two, 17-15 with 11:09 on the scoreboard.

The Panthers continued to trail and were still down two, 24-22 with 5:10 remaining in the first when the Skyhawks unleashed a 13-4 run to close the half and take a 11 point lead into halftime, 37-26.

Adelphi started strong in the second half, out scoring Stonehill, 17-8 in the first five minutes to cut the lead to just two points, 45-43. Then a Byrd jumper at the 12:03 mark gave the Panthers their first lead since the first five minutes of action, 51-49. The game would be nip and tuck the rest of the way, with no one able to take more then a four point advantage, setting up Byrd's three-point attempt in the final 10 seconds.

The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday, January 25 when they return home to host Franklin Pierce at 7:30 pm.
