The Adelphi University women's basketball team traveled to Syracuse, New York earlier today to take on the Le Moyne College Dolphins in a Northeast-10 conference match-up. With the game knotted at 48 apiece, senior Ashley Caiafa scored the game-winning field goal at the 4:07 mark and then made two crucial free throws down the stretch giving Adelphi a 53-48 win. With the victory, Adelphi extends its winning streak to two games, winners of four of their last five, improving to 6-5 overall, 3-4 in NE-10 play. Le Moyne falls to 3-8, 0-6 in league action.
The Panthers were led by three scorers in double-figures as Caiafa collected 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Freshman Jessica Kitrys also tallied 14 points and picked up seven rebounds, while junior Amanda Campusano had 13 points on the game. Sophomore Emily Bayla led Le Moyne with a game-high 16 points, while her teammates, graduate student Courtney Coryea had 13 and junior Megan Rowland added 10 points.
Adelphi never trailed in the second-half as they opened the stanza on a 7-0 burst jumping out to a 38-31 lead with 14:29 remaining. A Bayly three-pointer put Le Moyne within three, 43-40, however, a basket by sophomore Alexis Williams followed by two points by Kitrys extended Adelphi's lead back up to seven, 48-41 with 6:56 in regulation. Coryea capped a run of its own for Le Moyne tying the game at 48-48 with a jumper with 4:21 on the clock. Caiafa scored its final two points with the 14-seconds later which proved to be the game-winning field goal. Le Moyne had three potential opportunities to tie the game up and potential take the lead, but was unable to covert.
After coming out of the gate sluggish, Adelphi went on a 15-0 tear as they took a 17-12 lead with 12:19 in the first-half. Nine of the Panthers' first 15-points came from downtown as junior Amanda Campusano hit two treys while Caiafa connected with a three-ball. Le Moyne answered with two consecutive lay-ups by Rowland and Couryea at the 11:01 mark to get within a point, 17-16. Both squads traded buckets over the next eight minutes of action as Adelphi found itself down 26-24 with 3:28 to go. Kitrys and Caiafa combined for Adelphi's next six points as they energized an 8-0 Panthers' spurt with 59 seconds to go, however, the Dolphins trimmed the deficit to one, 32-31, courtesy of a Baily three and a Roland basket concluding the half.
Both teams did not shoot up to par on the floor as Adelphi shot 31-percent for the game, but held Le Moyne to only 27-percent in the contest.
Adelphi looks to continue its winning ways as they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Southern New Hampshire University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5th.
