Men's Basketball Dodges the Dolphins, 88-84

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Syracuse, New York on Sunday, January 2, opening 2011 against the Dolphins of LeMoyne College. Adelphi trailed by seven at the half, 44-37, but shot 60 percent in the second period to pull out a 88-84 victory. With the win the Panthers improve to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10, while LeMoyne falls to 4-7 and 2-5 in conference action.

Adelphi placed six players in double figures, led by Chris Ranglin with 16 and five rebounds, Richard Harkins added 15 points. Both Rob Johnson and Richard Byrd chipped in 13 points and David Akinyooye contributed 11 points and a team-high six rebounds. John Calarco also scored in double digits with 10 points.

Most of the first period was back and forth, as LeMoyne tried to pull away, but the Panthers hung tough and repeatedly clawing back into the game. The Dolphins led by one, 31-30, with 3:34 to play and used a 9-2 run to push their advantage to eight, 40-32 with 1:46 on the clock.

The Panthers would get within five points, twice in the final 90 seconds of action, before entering the locker room trailing, 44-37.

The host Dolphins continued to lead in the second frame and held their biggest lead of the game, nine points, 70-61, with 7:54 to play. However, Adelphi came alive, throwing nine unanswered points on the board, knotting the game at 70 with 5:50 to play.

After some back and forth the Panthers would take the lead for good, 77-76, on two Akinyooye free throws with 3:49 on the clock. From there the Panthers would lengthen their lead to six, before eventually claiming a four point, 88-84 win.

Adelphi returns to the court on Wednesday, January 5 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for a 7:30 pm meeting with Southern New Hampshire.
