The Adelphi University women's basketball team took on the Riverhawks of UMass Lowell this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Lowell took a 44-30 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to a 83-58 victory. The Riverhawks improve to 6-8 and 5-5 in the NE-10, while the Panthers fall to 6-8 and 3-7.
For the Panthers, freshman Sade Jackson led the way with a career-best 14 points, while classmate Jessica Kitrys added 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior Ashley Caiafa chipped in with nine points and five boards.
After a lay-up from Sarah Bennett, the Panthers evened the score at 7-7 on a three-pointer from Jackson, the closest AU would get the rest of the game. Lowell would then push their lead to 12, 22-10, halfway through the first half off a bucket from Sha'Nay Bushner. Adelphi would go on a 10-2 run over the next five and a half minutes to get within four, highlighted by two triples from Caiafa. The Riverhawks would close the half strong and head into the locker room with a 14-point cushion after a three from Bianca Simmons with seven seconds left on the clock.
The second half was all Riverhawks as they maintained a double-digit lead throughout. The closest AU got in the second half was at the 15:12 mark when sophomore Samantha Breidenbach got them to within 11, 51-40. The Riverhawks would extend their lead to 20, 66-46, their largest of the game at the time.
Lowell shot 49.2-percent from the field and 41.2-percent from behind the arc, while AU shot 29.9-percent from the field and 18.8-percent from three. The Riverhawks owned the battle on the glass over the Panthers 50-35.
For the Riverhawks, Simmons scored a game-high 27 points to go along with five assists, while Bushner notched a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 15 when they host league-rival Merrimack College at 1:30 p.m.
