Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University men's soccer team welcomed Syracuse University to Garden City on Saturday, September 4 in a non-conference contest. The Panthers had more then a few quality scoring chances and finally put one away in overtime to collect a, 1-0 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 2-0 overall, while Syracuse falls to 0-2.
Adelphi's John Koutsounadis got things off to a fast start for the Panthers as he found himself open and 12 yards from the post. He rifled a ball on the ground to the side of Orange goalie, Jeremy Vuolo, but Koutsounadis' effort struck the post and was cleared. The remainder of the half was played primarily between the 18's and the game was scoreless at the half.
The second half was more of the same, until the closing minutes, when the Panthers upped the pressure. Koutsounadis had another quality attempt as he struck a solid ball from 20 yards out that looked to be heading into the Syracuse net. However, Vuolo jumped for the ball and made and outstanding save, just brushing it over the bar, preventing a goal.
The Panthers best chance of the second half came in the 86th minute when the Orange were whistled for a foul in the penalty box and Adelphi was awarded a penalty kick. Issa Tall took the free strike for the Panthers, but sent the ball over the bar, which would send the game into overtime.
The first half of overtime was relatively uneventful as Mauricio Mora and Alex Kouznetsov took a couple long strikes, which Vuolo handled easily. Adelphi was awarded a second penalty kick just 52 seconds into the second overtime period as an Adelphi attacker was pulled down inside the box. Kouznetsov lined up to take the free attempt and buried it, beating Vuolo with a strike to the upper left half of the net.
Thorne Holder was credited with the win and his second shut out of the season, as he collected two saves. Vuolo made six stops in the loss. Adelphi held an edge in both shots, 13-3 and corner kicks, 3-1, while Syracuse was whistled for 22 fouls and Adelphi just 12.
The Panthers return to action on September 9, when they play host to Marist at 7:00 pm in a non-conference clash.
