The Adelphi University volleyball team opened their season with a victory against Stonehill on Friday in Northeast-10 women's volleyball action. The Panthers won 3-2 (25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10) on day one of the Golden Lion Classic hosted by Dowling College.
Adelphi took the victory by way of a balanced offensive attack, as four players recorded double figures in kills. The Panthers were led by a double-double (18 kills, 20 digs) from senior Hilary Pavels, while junior Patawe Simms added 15 kills and sophomores Emily Dorko and Samantha Rico notched 10 apiece. Senior setter Heather Mau dished out 41 assists in the win.
Skyhawk Sydney Maxey led Stonehill with 12 kills, and also added 17 digs and four service aces. Senior Laura Noonan posted eight kills, and senior setter Andrea Wirth recorded 33 assists.
The Skyhawks went ahead 2-1 after three sets, but Adelphi rallied to win two straight for the overall victory.
Stonehill (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) and Adelphi (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) will each play Dowling College on Saturday, while the Panthers will also face NE-10 rival Pace.
