Volleyball Caps Weekend with, 3-1 Win Over St. Rose

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team capped off a busy week on Sunday, September 26 by hosting Northeast-10 rival the College of Saint Rose. The Panthers took the first two games in style, 25-13 and 25-16, but had to fight in the final two, squeaking out a victory with a, 25-21 showing in game four. With the win Adelphi improves to 7-5 overall and remains unbeaten in the Northeast-10 at 3-0, while St. Rose falls to 3-10 and 1-2.

The Panthers seemed to roll in games one and two, posting attack percentages of .351 and .355 compared to .028 and .065 for St. Rose. Adelphi also compiled a total of 32 kills in the first two games, while picking up victories of 25-13 and 25-16.

However, The visiting Golden Knights turned the tables in game three, jumping out to an early lead and forcing the Panthers to play catch-up. St. Rose led 17-14, but Adelphi pulled to within one, 19-18, but the Golden Knights moved ahead again, 23-20. The Panthers used one last effort to get back within one, 23-22, on an attack error, but a St. Rose kill and service ace closed the door, 25-22.

The fourth game saw Adelphi take the early lead, 7-3, and this time St. Rose clawed their way back in it, taking a 15-13 lead. However, with the scored 21-20 St. Rose, a Chelsea Overholt kill and Alexandra Kahen service ace gave Adelphi the lead, 22-21 on the way to a 25-21 game victory.

Hilary Pavels led four Panthers with double digit kills with 16. Overholt, Emily Dorko and Samantha Rico posted 13, 11 and 10 kills each, while Katie Bryson led all players with 38 assists. Heather Mau led four more Panthers with double digit kills as she had 27, while Bree Popham chipped in 15 and Pavels and Bryson had 12 and 11.

Adelphi returns to action on Friday, October 1 when they play host to Saint Anselm at 7:00 pm in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.
