Field Hockey Scores Late To Defeat Franklin Pierce, 2-1

The Adelphi University field hockey team hosted the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University this afternoon on Motamed Field. With the score tied at 1-1 late in the second half, the Panthers scored off a penalty corner to secure the win. AU improves to 4-3, while FPU falls to 2-4.

Adelphi broke the scoreless tie 24:41 into the first half when senior Lindsay Williams sent a crossing pass in front of the goal where junior Jeanette Heimerle one-timed it to the back of the cage, giving AU a 1-0 lead. Heimerle's score was the only goal of the half.

The Panthers held the advantage in shots (5-3) and penalty corners (6-3) in the first half of action.

The Ravens would even the score at 1-1, 55:38 into the contest, when Tia Levins scored off a deflection of a Ravens' shot. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Heimerle received a pass off of a penalty corner and set up junior Theresa Murphy for the game-winner.

The Ravens out shot AU (10-8), but the Panthers held the edge in penalty corners (9-8). Junior Lucia Vigliotti recorded three saves in the win, while Brittany Nyzio also stopped three shots.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, October 5 when they travel to take on cross-town rival C.W. Post at 4:00 p.m.
