The Adelphi University women's soccer team hosted the Riverhawks of UMass Lowell this afternoon on Motamed Field. The Panthers scored two first half goals, which proved to be enough as they held on for the 3-1 victory. Adelphi improves to 2-2-1 and 2-2 in the Northeast-10, while UMass Lowell falls to 1-4-1 and 1-3 in the league.
Both teams got on the board early in the first three minutes of action. For AU, senior Kim Volinski stole the ball from a UML defender and sent one to the back of the net, giving the Panthers an early lead. Less than a minute after Volinski's tally, Jenna Costa evened the score at 1-1 when she scored off a rebound from a previous shot.
The Panthers would strike again, 28:55 into the first half, when senior Brianne McDonnell beat a UML defender and sent a cross to Volinski for her second score of the game. The Riverhawks held a 8-3 shot advantage in the first half, and also had the only corner kick.
In the second half, the Riverhawks had a perfect opportunity to even the score at 2-2 but senior defender Kristen Dexter blocked the would be game-tying score.
Adelphi would add an insurance goal at the 68-minute mark when McDonnell netted her first goal of the season with the assist coming from sophomore Meghan Carey.
UML ended the game with a 13-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners. Junior Dorothy Connolly recorded six saves in the win, while Micaela Butlin set aside three shots.
The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, September 21 when they travel to take on No. 1 ranked The College of St. Rose at 5:00 p.m.
