The Adelphi University field hockey team traveled to Waltham, Mass. this afternoon to take on Bentley University. With the game even at 1-1 at the end of regulation, senior Natasha Pedzik netted the game-winner to give AU the win. The Panthers improve to 2-3, while Bentley drops to 0-4.
The Panthers got on the board first, 10:42 into the contest, when freshman Jamie Ackerman scored her first collegiate goal off a feed from junior Brittany Kinsley. While AU took a 1-0 lead into the half, the Falcons held the advantage in shots, 7-6, and also in penalty corners, 4-1.
At the 56-minute mark in the second half, Bentley would even the score at 1-all when Beth Maguire registered her second goal of the season, which came from Haley Smith.
The score would remain 1-1 at the end of regulation. Bentley once again held the advantage in shots in the second half, 7-6, but both teams each had four penalty corners.
In the first overtime, Adelphi had an opportunity early off a penalty corner but junior Jeanette Heimerle's shot sailed wide of the cage. In the 74th and 75th minute Bentley had two shots on goal but junior Lucia Vigliotti came up with two big saves to keep the Panthers in it.
After a Heimerle shot and save by Bentley's Julia Powell, Pedzik collected the loose ball and fired one to the back of the cage for the game-winner.
Bentley ended the game with the edge in shots (18-16) and penalty corners (10-6) but it wasn't enough as AU held on for the win. Vigliotti recorded 10 saves in the win, while Powell set aside seven shots.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow as they travel to take on St. Anselm College at noon.
