The Adelphi University volleyball team played host to NYIT on Tuesday, September 14 in a non-conference contest. The Panthers found themselves in a, 2-0 in their season opener before rallying back to steal a, 3-2 victory from the Bears. With the loss NYIT falls to 3-4 overall, while Adelphi improves to 3-5.
Adelphi dropped the first two games by identical scores of, 25-19 as the Bears posted attack percentages of .205 and .208 to Adelphi's .075 and .128. However, Adelphi's defense got rolling in the third set, holding NYIT to an attack percentage of just .020, while the Panthers crushed 12 kills to pick-up a 25-20 win.
The fourth game was just as close, with each team producing 13 kills, but Adelphi squeaking out the win, 25-22 to knot the contest at four. In the fifth game the Panthers built a commanding, 13-4 lead, before NYIT rallied to pull within 14-9, before Adelphi closed out the contest, 15-9.
Hilary Pavels led the way for Adelphi with a big double-double, as she collected 15 kills and a game-high 29 digs. Both Patawe Simms and Emily Dorko found their way to double digit kills, with 12 and 10 respectively and Dorko added 17 digs. Katie Bryson led the Panthers with 27 assists, while Heather Mau chipped in 22 to go along with 14 digs.
Adelphi returns to action on September 22 when they travel to New Haven, Connecticut for a 7:00 pm, Northeast-10 Conference contest with Southern Connecticut State.
