Women's Soccer Falls in NE-10 Opener To Merrimack, 2-1

The Adelphi University women's soccer team traveled to North Andover, Mass. this evening to take on the Warriors of Merrimack College. With the game even at 1-1, the Warriors scored the game-winning goal late in the second half for the 2-1 victory. Merrimack improves to 1-1-1 and 1-0 in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi drops to 0-1-1 and 0-1 in the league.

The Warriors got on the board first, seven minutes into the contest, when Lindsey deMont found Danielle Dion for the freshman's first collegiate score. The Panthers would even the score at 1-1 when senior Brianne McDonnell set up classmate Kim Volinski for the game-tying score. The goal was Volinski's second in as many games.

The two teams played an even first half as the Warriors held the advantage in shots, 5-4. Adelphi owned the edge in corners, 3-2.

The game remained tied until the 77th minute when Dion sent a cross to Jenn Pino for the eventual game-winner. The Warriors got off 15 shots to the Panthers' eight, while Merrimack also held the advantage in corners, 6-3. Kiley Horne stopped two shots and junior Dorothy Connolly set aside six shots in the loss.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, September 12 when they play host to Stonehill College on Motamed Field at noon.
