Junior Deandra Leo scored the game-winning run to lift Adelphi to a 2-1 win over #10-ranked The University of New Haven in game three of the Northeast-10 Softball Championships. The Panthers finish day one with a 2-0 record and improve to 32-22 on the season, while the Chargers drop to 38-5.
After a quiet first three innings, the Chargers got on board in the bottom of the fourth as Downs walked, then stole second before scoring on a RBI single by Walters.
Ogden reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth inning. Leo doubled to right center, scoring Ogden to knot the score, 1-1. Freshman Heather Salerno drove in Leo on a single up the middle for the game-winning run.
The Chargers managed two hits in the last two innings, with neither runner moving beyond first base as the Panthers held on for the upset win.
Junior Leighann Bell (17-9) pitched the complete four-hitter with four strikeouts. Gleason (33-4) took the loss for UNH, with two runs scored, two earned, while fanning eight.
The Panthers will take on the winner of the #3 LeMoyne/#5 Southern Connecticut match-up tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
