Canino's Pinch-Hit Two-Run Home Run Lifts Softball Past Assumption, 2-0

The fourth-seeded Adelphi University softball team traveled to West Haven, Connecticut to take on fifth-seeded Assumption College this morning in the double-elimination Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Junior Maria Canino's pinch-hit two-run homer produced the only runs of the game in the Panther victory.

For the Panthers, Canino went 1-for-1 with a two-run homer, while freshman Amanda Dolan and junior Deandra Leo each went 1-for-2. Junior Leighann Bell got the win, giving up three hits over seven innings, and striking out eight.

Leo led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Jacqueline Bellairs would come in to pinch-run for Leo and would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Heather Salerno. Canino would then enter the game as a pinch-hitter and send a two-run shot for the eventual game-winning runs.

Both teams scattered three hits each, while the Panthers committed three errors to Assumption's two.

For the Greyhounds, Breanna Morrissey, Meghan Di Vitto, and Ashley Bilodeau each went 1-for-3. Jennifer Lowrey suffered the loss, giving up three hits and two runs over six innings, while striking out two.

The Panthers return to action today at 1:00 p.m. when they take on first-seeded University of New Haven.
