The fifth-seeded Adelphi University baseball team took on first-seeded Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in the double-elimination Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Panthers had an 8-6 lead but could not hold on as the Owls went on to win, 9-8. SCSU advances to day three of the tournament, while Adelphi is eliminated.
For the Panthers, senior Chris Weidlein went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a two-run home run, while sophomore Justin Farnum went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Freshman Dillon McNamara took the loss, giving up four hits and three earned runs in 1.1 innings, while striking out two.
Weidlein got the Panthers on the board early in the top of the first with a two-run shot down the left field line. Southern Connecticut would come back in the bottom half of the inning and score one run on a solo shot from Ryan Geffert.
The Owls would double up the Panthers with three runs in the bottom of the third. Kyle Rosadino scored the first run on a wild pitch, which was then followed up by an RBI single and an RBI fielder's choice.
Two innings later in the bottom of the fifth, Jordan Hockenberry sent a two-run double down the right field line, giving SCSU a 6-2 advantage. The Panthers would answer back in the top of the sixth on a two-run homer to right field off the bat of Farnum.
In the seventh inning, the two teams would combine to score seven runs. In the top half of the inning Adelphi scored four runs, highlighted by a two-run single through the left side from senior Justin Ciamillo. Down 8-6 headed into the bottom of the seventh, the Owls scored three runs to take a 9-8 lead. With two outs and a runner of third, Michael Cleary delivered the eventual game-winning RBI single to right.
For the Owls, Geffert went 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs scored, while Hockenberry went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Michael Johnston recorded the win, surrendering no hits over 2.2 innings, and striking out four.
The Panthers, who are now eliminated from the NE-10 Tournament, will now await an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
