The #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team suffered its first setback in 32 games, falling to #2 C.W. Post, 21-16, this afternoon at Competition Field. The Pioneers improve to 15-1, while the Panthers drop to 14-1.
The Pioneers took control of the game from the opening draw, as Ashley Olen scored the first of her three goals in the 5th minute of play. This spurred a 5-0 run by C.W. Post, capped by Stacie Passafiume at 22:05. Junior Kaitlyn Carter ended the rally with a free position goal at 21:48, which sparked the Panthers to tack on four more unanswered goals. Sophomore Claire Petersen scored on a man-up goal, assisted by sophomore Erica Devito at 22:02. Senior Corinne Pingitore's man down free position goal made it 3-5, with freshman Demmianne Cook's unassisted goal to follow at 16:45. Petersen and Devito teamed up again to knot the score at 5-5 at 15:00. Cook put the Panthers up, 6-5, on a feed from Kristina Wargo at 13:46. The Pioneers struck back, and traded goals with the Panthers until the final 1:21 of the half, as Michelle Fucich tied it up for the fourth time, 8-8.
Devito scored at 24:40 into the second half, assisted by Cook, but the Pioneers Brianne Jackolski evened it up, 9-9, on a free position shot. Carter responded with a quick unassisted goal before junior Elizabeth Fey made it 11-9 on an assist from Alison Incarnato at 22:15. C.W. Post, fueled by Fucich rattled off three unanswered goal to push ahead, 12-11. Fey's third goal of the day kept it close, 12-12, on an assist from Carter. The Pioneers again rallied to action on a 3-0 run to pull ahead for good, 15-12. The Panthers managed to close to within one, 16-15, on an unassisted goal by Incarnato. Late penalties and fouls hampered the Panthers, as the Pioneers closed on a 5-1 run to cruise to victory, 21-16.
Jackolski led the Pioneers with four goals and one assist, while Fucich had three goals and five assists.
Domonique Mosca made 11 saves for C.W. Post, while senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick had ten saves.
Adelphi 8-6 in its all-time meetings with C.W. Post. In 2009, the Panthers defeated the Pioneers twice en route to a NCAA Championship. The loss today snaps a 32-game win streak dating back to May, 15, 2008, when Adelphi fell to Post, 9-4 at the NCAA Final Four in Houston, Texas. That record ties C.W. Post's longest win streak of 32, from March 9, 2007 and was ended by the Panthers on May 2, 2008.
The Panthers are back in action next Saturday, May 8, as they host the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. As the top seed, Adelphi, along with #2 Stonehill, will receive a first round bye. Pairing and game times to be announced.
