The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Yellow Jackets of American International College this afternoon in a conference contest on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Adelphi put up one run in the first and two in the second en route to the victory, 3-1. The Panthers improve to 19-7 and 6-3 in the league, while AIC falls to 6-16 and 3-9.
For the Panthers, senior Chris Weidlein and junior Richard McCarren each went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while senior Anthony Anzalone and sophomore Craig Matteo went 2-for-6 with two runs scored combined. Junior Jonathan Gonzalez went the distance, giving up two hits and striking out nine for the win.
With two outs in the top of the first, senior Justin Ciamillo lined a single down the left field line to get things started for AU. Ciamillo would then steal second and come around to scored on an RBI single from Weidlein.
The Panthers would put two more runs up in the second, which proved to be the difference in the game. Matteo would steal second which would allow Anzalone to score the second run from third. With two outs and Matteo on third, McCarren would deliver a single up the middle to plate Matteo.
AIC had a chance to put a run up in the fourth inning, but Dan Fontaine was thrown out at the plate from left field by freshman Thomas Torregrossa.
Mike Tranghese would produce the only Yellow Jacket run. Tranghese would steal second, followed by a steal of third and come around to score after a failed pickoff attempt from the Panthers.
Adelphi would scatter six hits and commit one error, while AIC would produce two hits and no errors defensively.
For the Yellow Jackets, Fontaine went 1-for-3 with a double, while Anthony Archiello finished 1-for-2. Matt Lee suffered a tough loss, throwing eight innings, giving up three runs and striking out one.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 10 with a conference doubleheader at home against UMass Lowell starting at 12:00 p.m.
