The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to take on American International College this afternoon in Springfield, Massachusetts. Adelphi had a 3-1 lead headed into the seventh inning, only to come up short, 7-4. The win improves the Yellow Jackets to 6-15 and 3-5 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers drop to 18-7 and 5-3.
For the Panthers, junior Richard McCarren went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a home run, while senior Justin Ciamillo went 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Senior Chris Weidlein finished 2-for-4, and classmate Mike Bartlett got the no-decision, throwing six innings, giving up one run and striking out nine.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when senior Anthony Anzalone delivered a sacrifice fly to left-center for the first run. Sophomore Robert Eysel drove in Ciamillo with an RBI single to left field for the second run of the inning.
The Panthers would add a run in the third inning on a lead-off home run to right field from McCarren. The Yellow Jackets would answer back and get on the board in the bottom half of the inning when Mike Tranghese delivered an RBI single up the middle.
With one out and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Dillon Fontaine belted a three-run homer down the right field line, giving AIC their first lead of the game at 4-3. Two RBI singles and a RBI double resulted in the eight-run eighth for the Yellow Jackets, putting the game out of reach for the Panthers.
Adelphi would add one more run in the top of the ninth when freshman Nick Pomo-Roman scored from third base on a wild pitch.
For the Yellow Jackets, Fontaine was 1-for-5 with a three-run homer, while Sean McClelland went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. John Hanna picked up the win, throwing 8.1 innings, giving up 13 hits and striking out three.
The Panthers return to action on Thursday, April 8 when they host AIC in a NE-10 contest on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field at 3:30 p.m.
