The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Cougars of Caldwell College this afternoon in a non-conference contest. Seniors Justin Ciamillo and Chris Weidlein hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the ninth to give the Panthers the victory, 7-6. Adelphi improves to 18-6, while Caldwell drops to 8-12.
For the Panthers, junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base, while Ciamillo went 1-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI, and a home run. Sophomore Robert Eysel added two RBI as well. Senior Mike Scudero and sophomore Chris Pabisch struck out 12 batters in seven innings of work combined, while freshman Dillon McNamara picked up the win, striking out one in two thirds of relief.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Eysel grounded out to short, driving in junior Matt Barle. Sophomore Craig Matteo would score the second run on a throwing error by Andrew Roberston.
Caldwell would come back in the top half of the fifth and score three times. Juan Mejia hit a solo home run for the first run, which was then followed by a two-run single from Jorge Ynoa. The Panthers would re-gain the lead with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Eysel and Ciamillo supplied both runs in the inning with a sacrifice fly each.
Junior Trevor Thorstensen would manufacture the next run for the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth. Thorstensen would get on after getting hit by a pitch, steal second, and then score from third on a wild pitch.
Caldwell would get three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-5 lead, their first of the game. Raymond Keelan would drive in the first two runs with a two-run shot to center. Doug Hilgenberg would then follow Keelan with a solo shot to left.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Ciamillo hit a deep homer to the left-center field gap, followed by Weidlein driving one just inside the left field foul pole for the walk-off win.
For the Cougars, Keelan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, a triple, and a home run, while Ynoa finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Keelan took the loss on the mound, throwing 2.2 innings of relief, giving up four hits and striking out two.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to take on American International College at 3:30 p.m.
