The Adelphi University baseball team swept Merrimack College 7-1 and 10-4 in conference action this afternoon at Volpe Field. The Panthers improve to 17-6 and 5-2 in the NE10, while the Warriors fall to 8-5 and 5-3.
Game One
The Panthers got on board in the top of the third as sophomore Craig Matteo scored on an fielding error after reaching first on a hit by pitch and advancing on a single by senior Anthony Anzalone. The Warriors knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI double by Curran.
Adelphi responded with six straight runs over the next two innings. In the sixth, senior Justin Ciamillo blasted a two run homer, followed by a RBI single by junior Matt Barle to score sophomore T.J. Humrich. Ciamillo followed up with a RBI single in the seventh inning before crossing home plate on a two RBI double by Humrich.
Junior Keith Couch went the distance, allowing six hits, one run, while walking one and striking out nine. O'Rourke took the loss for the Warriors in 7.2 innings pitched.
Adelphi had seven runs on 12 hits with one error. Merrimack had one run on six hits with two errors.
Game Two
Merrimack jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Adelphi rattled off seven runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Two Warrior errors positioned sophomore Robert Eysel to round home on a single by Matteo. With the bases still loaded junior Richard McCarren's two RBI double drove in Barle and junior Trevor Thorstensen.
Matteo made it home on a fielder's choice, 4-2. On his second time around, Eysel's single to left field drove in two more runs for the Panthers. A pitching change by the Warriors didn't stop the Panthers, as Humrich's single drove in senior Chris Weidlein for the final run.
Ciamillo and Eysel both scored in the sixth inning to push the lead to 9-2. Then in the eighth inning, the Panthers added one more run as Weidlein, who reached on a walk, scored on a Barle single. Merrimack tacked on two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning as two Adelphi errors set up the two RBI double by Arce.
Junior Robert Nixon recorded the win on the mound in 7.2 innings pitched with seven hits, two runs, two walks and five strikeouts. McNeil was credited with the loss in 3.2 innings pitched.
Adelphi had 10 runs on 15 hits with three errors. Merrimack had four runs on eight hits with five errors.
The Panthers are back in action on Monday, April 5, as they play host to Caldwell College for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
