Baseball Suffers A 7-5 Setback To Wilmington

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted non-conference opponent Wilmington University (DE) this afternoon. The Wildcats tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning and never looked back en route to the victory, 7-5. Wilmington improves to 26-14, while Adelphi drops to 29-15.

For the Panthers, sophomore Craig Matteo went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior Chris Weidlein went 2-for-4 with a run scored as well. Sophomore Chris Pabisch took the loss, giving up five hits and four runs in four innings, while striking out three.

Adelphi jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when junior Richard McCarren scored from third after senior Justin Ciamillo stole second. Sophomore T.J. Humrich drove in the second run with an RBI groundout to short.

Wilmington would answer back in the top of the second and even the score at 2-2. Matt Botting drove in both Wildcat runs with a two-run single to center. Bryan Miller would give Wilmington a two-run lead in the top the third with a two-run home run.

The Wildcats would extend to their largest lead of the game, 6-2, after producing two more runs in the top of the sixth. The Panthers would come back and score three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Lucas Romeo drove in the first run with an RBI single. McCarren would draw a walk with the bases loaded, followed by senior Anthony Anzalone getting hit by the pitch, making the score 6-5.

In the top of the seventh, Bryan Short stole third and scored on a Panther throwing error, giving the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.

For the Wildcats, Miller went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run, while Botting went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Ryan Lally picked up the win, throwing six innings, giving up five runs and striking out six. JT Gregory threw a scoreless ninth for the save.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, May 1 when they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire to take on Franklin Pierce University in a doubleheader at noon in their final regular season games.
