Sophomore Marissa Mills registered six goals and two assists to lead the #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 25-9 victory over Southern New Hampshire this afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers improve to 14-0 and 11-0 to clinch the regular season title in the Northeast-10, while the Penmen fall to 8-5 and 7-2 in the league.
Prior to the start of the game, Adelphi honored its graduating class of 2010 which combined to help the Panthers to three NCAA Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 2009.
Senior Alison Incarnato put the Panthers up 16 seconds into the contest on an unassisted shot. Senior Allison Tumulty made it 2-0 on an assist from senior Brittany Fronczak in the 4th minute. SNHU's Sara Halbich closed the gap on a free position goal at 26:25, but freshman Demmianne Cook's unassisted goal sparked a 4-0 run, capped by Mills at 10:11. Halbich picked up her second goal at 5:25, but Mills scored twice more, followed by sophomore Claire Petersen who closed out the half with a free position goal with 13 seconds remaining, 9-2.
Both teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the second half. However the Penmen took advantage of two man-up situations to outscore the Panthers 4-1 over the next five minutes to close to within five, 12-7. Junior Kristina Wargo stopped the rally on a solo goal at 20:59. Later, back to back free position goals by Mills and Cook's fourth goal widened the gap, 17-8, at 17:26. Halbich scored her fourth goal and the last for SNHU with 16:58 left to play on an assist from Rene DiPietro. Adelphi rattled off eight unanswered goals, three straight by Petersen, to close out the contest and remain undefeated, 25-9.
On the game, Adelphi held a 47-25 shot advantage, and scooped up 46 ground balls, compared with 26 for SNHU. However, both team shared on draws, taking 18 a piece.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick had 10 stops for the Panthers, while Hannah Moriarty made 14 saves for the Penmen.
Adelphi is back in action next Saturday, May 1, as they host C.W. Post at 4:00 p.m. its regular season finale.
