Baseball Bounces Back With 5-1 Victory Over #18 Southern Connecticut

The Adelphi University baseball team traveled to take on 18th-ranked Connecticut State University this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Adelphi scored three in the eighth, followed by two in the ninth for the win, 5-1. The Panthers improve to 27-12 and 13-7 in the NE-10, while the Owls fall to 29-9-1 and 17-5.

For the Panthers, senior Anthony Anzalone went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while classmate Justin Ciamillo went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Robert Nixon earned the win, striking out one in one inning of work, while junior Keith Couch recorded his second save, striking out two in 1.2 innings. 

The Owls scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Eric Schlitter sent an RBI double to right field, scoring Jordan Hockenberry.

In the top of the eighth, the Panthers finally got on the board and put SCSU away. Senior Chris Weidlein would drive in the first run to even the score at 1-1. Ciamillo and Weidlein would come around to score on a two-run single to center off the bat of sophomore Justin Farnum. 

Adelphi would add two more runs in the top of the ninth. Junior Richard McCarren scored the first run on a RBI double down the left field line from Anzalone. Ciamillo knocked in the final Panther run with a single to right field, scoring Anzalone. 

For the Owls, Schlitter went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Hockenberry went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Kevin Pettine pitched well taking the no-decision, throwing seven innings, giving up one run and striking out three. 

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 24 when they host Southern New Hampshire University in a conference doubleheader at noon on Senior Day.
