Panthers Split With Saint Rose

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University softball team hosted The College of Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 conference doubleheader this afternoon at Garden City Park. The Panthers won game one by a final of 5-4, before dropping the nightcap, 10-8.

Game One
Rochelle Noren hit the game-winning RBI single up the middle scoring Emily Dorko in the Panthers' sixth increasing their lead to 5-3, as Adelphi hung on for the 5-4 win in the opener.

Noren and Katie Brophy led the way for Adelphi in game one as they combined for five hits, 4 RBI, and three runs scored. Noren batted 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored while Brophy went 2-for-3, 2 RBI, and one run scored.

The Purple Knights were led by Katie Ives as she batted 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Adelphi struck first plating three early for a 3-0 advantage. In the Panthers' first, Brophy tripled to left-center scoring Noren from second for the first run of the afternoon. Shay Craig followed with a RBI single that brought home Brophy. The one-two combination of Noren and Brophy struck again, as Brophy's base hit up the middle scored Noren in Adelphi's third. Noren tripled to right-center leading off the frame.

The Golden Knights answered with three runs in the fourth as Jessica Butterodt smashed a two-run RBI single to left-center which was followed by a Nicole Traylor RBI single tying the contest at 3-3.

Adelphi used small ball reclaiming their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Heather Salerno scored on a sacrifice bunt by Noren for the 4-3 Adelphi lead. Salerno singled, advanced to second on an Saint Rose error, and advanced to third on the sacrifice bunt by Emily Dorko.

Adelphi hurler Leighann Bell induced Ashley Anderson to ground out to short, ending the Golden Knights' two-out rally in the top of the seventh. Ives RBI single to right trotted home Lauren Ruggerio and moved Lindsay David to second with two-outs.

Bell earned the victory pitching a complete game seven innings, striking out three batters, while allowing three earned runs.

Game Two
Adelphi scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Noren singled then advanced to third on a throwing error by first base which put Brophy on. Noren later scored on a single by Craig, with Brophy eventually scoring on a passed ball. The Golden Knights knotted the score in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, Robinson reached first on a drop third strike out and scored, unearned, on a RBI single by Noren, 3-2.

The Panthers extended their lead to 6-2 after a three-run third inning. A single by Dolan and a hit by pitch for Deandra Leo set up the 2 RBI single by Salerno. Robinson singled and scored on a wild pitch. Saint Rose rallied back in the fifth inning, with five hits, to score four runners and tie the game, 6-6.

In the fifth inning, Adelphi added two runs on a wild pitch, scoring Paige Rhodes and Deandra Leo to take the lead, 8-6. But Saint Rose would not go away, tallying four runs in the top of the seventh. Ruggerio's 3 RBI double sealed the win for the Golden Knights, as she later scored on a infield error, 10-8.

Arbogast recorded the win, with eight hits, eight runs, six earned, while scattering seven. Robinson took the loss in 6.2 innings pitched.

The Panthers are back in action on Thursday, April 22, as they host Dowling College at 3:00 p.m. at the softball field located in field #1 at the Garden City pool.
