The Adelphi University baseball team hosted #18 Southern Connecticut State University this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Owls scored five unanswered runs en route to the 5-1 victory. SCSU improves to 29-8-1 and 17-4 in the NE-10, while Adelphi drops to 26-11 and 12-7.
For the Panthers, junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while sophomore T.J. Humrich finished 1-for-3. Junior Jonathan Gonzalez suffered the loss, throwing 4.2 innings, giving up four hits, no earned runs and striking out four.
Adelphi got their only run in the bottom of the first inning when McCarren scored from third on a wild pitch. In the top of the third inning with two outs, Ryan Geffert sent a three-run home run over the center field fence to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.
In the top half of the sixth, Nick DeProspo laid down a squeeze bunt which plated Michael Cleary for the fourth Owls' run. SCSU would add one more run in the top of the eighth on a Cleary RBI double to left.
Southern Connecticut scattered seven hits and committed one error, while Adelphi had five hits to go along with two errors defensively.
For the Owls, Geffert went 1-for-4 with three RBI, a run scored, and a home run, while Cleary went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Nick Zbin went the distance for the win, giving up five hits, one earned, and striking out nine.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they play host to non-conference opponent Kutztown University at 3:30 p.m.
