Adelphi Softball Drops Two Against No. 15 New Haven

Game One|Game Two

West Haven, CT - The Adelphi University softball team was no match for #15 the University of New Haven, dropping two games, 11-2 and 7-3, in Northeast-10 action this afternoon. The Chargers extend their win streak to 14 to improve to 16-2 and 6-0 in the NE10, while the Panthers fall to 9-11 and 1-3.

Game One
The Chargers exploded with six runs in the top of the third inning, including a three RBI homerun by junior Courtney Garland. The Panthers got on board in the bottom of the fifth, as senior Ashley Vinti reached first on a hit by pitch then rounded second and third on hits by senior Christine Robinson and freshman Heather Salerno before scoring on a fielding error.

UNH extended its lead to 7-1 on a solo homerun by senior Nicole Downs at the top of the seventh. But it was three costly Panther errors that helped the Chargers score four unearned runs to push its lead to 11-1. Vinti blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Adelphi dropped game one, 11-2.

Senior Breanne Gleason recorded the five-hit win for the Chargers, while freshman Natalie Camarda took the loss in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Chargers had 11 runs on 13 hits with one error. The Panthers had two runs on five hits with five errors.

Game Two
UNH jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, followed by a two-run homer by Gelardi in the second inning to push the margin to 3-0. Gleason tripled then scored on a hit by Downs in the top of the fifth to make it 4-0, before the Panthers responded. Senior Rochelle Noren walked then stole second before rounding home plate on a single by Shay Craig.

Junior Deandra Leo singled to start the sixth inning and was push to third on a double by Robinson. She scored on a RBI single by freshman Paige Rhodes. Pinch hitter Amanda Dolan smashed a double to left field, bringing Robinson home as Adelphi closed the gap, 4-3. However the Chargers were not done, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, including a two RBI single by Garland. The Panthers couldn't get a runner on in the bottom of the inning as Gleason (14-1) made quick work of the AU hitters to preserve the win.

Robinson recorded the loss for Adelphi, allowing 12 hits and seven runs with four strikeouts.

New Haven had seven runs on 12 hits with no errors. Adelphi had three runs on seven hits with one error.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow, April 3, as they host Southern Connecticut State in a conference doubleheader on the campus of St. John's University in Jamaica, N.Y.
