The #16 Adelphi University baseball team traveled to Albany, New York this afternoon to take on the College of St. Rose. Adelphi was 3-2 headed into the bottom of the ninth before falling to the Golden Knights, 4-3. The win improves St. Rose to 10-23 and 5-11 in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi drops to 23-9 and 9-5.
For the Panthers, senior Justin Ciamillo had an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Thomas Torregrossa went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases. Junior Jonathan Gonzalez took the no-decision, throwing seven innings, giving up two runs and striking out four.
St. Rose got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Nick Alexandrovich delivered an RBI double to right field. Ciamillo would then plate junior Richard McCarren with a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Knights would take a 2-1 lead when Alexandrovich drove in Michael Carbone. With the score 2-1 headed in to the top half of the ninth, the Panthers would score two runs, taking a 3-2 lead. The first run was scored by freshman Nick Pomo-Roman when he scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Robert Eysel would then connect on a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle, scoring Ciamillo.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Burke would triple to right field, scoring Justin Lewis and tying the score at 3-3. Jesse Burba, next up, would score Burke with the game-winning run on a RBI single to center field.
For the Golden Knights, Carbone went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Alexandrovich went 1-for-2 with two RBI. David Bathelder took the no-decision as well, going eight innings, giving up one earned run and fanning seven.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 17 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on St. Anselm College in a conference doubleheader at noon.
