Sophomore Claire Petersen registered five goals and six assists to lead the #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 25-7 victory over American International College. The Panthers improve to 11-0 and 8-0 in the Northeast 10, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 7-4 and 2-4.
The Panthers jumped out to 4-0 lead, with sophomore Erica Devito scoring two of her five goals in the opening rally. AIC got on board with Katie Warner making an unassisted shot at 25:11. Freshman Demmianne Cook made it 6-1, with the first of her four goals, on a feed from junior Michelle Ceraso at 21:53. The Yellow Jackets score again, followed by junior Elizabeth Fey and Marissa Mills adding two more, 8-2.
The Yellow Jackets kept it close by tacking on two more goals with a free position shot and a man down goal to close to within four, 8-4, with 14:51 left in the half. Fey picked up her second goal to spur a 9-0 run as the Panthers carried a 17-4 lead into intermission.
The onslaught continued into the second half, with five more Adelphi goals to push the margin to 22-4, with 22:12 left in regulation. Warner found the back of the Panther net for the third time to snap the rally at 19:50. Senior Danielle Kafarski
scored next on a pass from senior Alison Incarnato. A minute later, Incarnato followed up with a solo shot to make it 24-5, with 17:52 to go. AIC managed two more goals over the next eight minutes, but it was Adelphi that had the last word. Freshman Sara Sangiorgio sealed the victory with help from senior Brittany Fronczak in the final minute of play.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded the win in 50:28 with four saves. Freshman Cathryn Bonitz closed out the final 9:32 in the net. Gina Gallo made 16 stops for the Yellow Jackets.
Adelphi is back in action this Saturday, April 17, as they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire to take on Saint Anselm College, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
