Sophomore Claire Petersen dished out a record-tying eight assists and one goal for nine points to lead the #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 24-0 win over St. Michael's College this afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers remain unblemished at 10-0 and 7-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Purple Knights fall to 1-6 and 1-3 in the league.
Petersen's eight assists ties the Adelphi single game record set by Rachel Ray '09 last season.
Sophomore Erica Devito and junior Elizabeth Fey each tallied five goals, with freshman Demmianne Cook chipping in four.
Fey opened the scoring on an assist from Petersen in the second minute of play. The Panthers led 10-0, on a Kristina Wargo goal, assisted by junior Michelle Ceraso at 21:51. Ceraso knotched the final goal of the half, 17-0, on a feed from Devito with 54 seconds remaining.
Seniors Corinne Pingitore and Alison Incarnato teamed up to make it a 20-0 affair in the 38th minute. Two minutes later, sophomore Alison Staudt scored unassisted. Petersen's lone goal came at 45:30 into the game, on an assist from Mills. Senior Joanna Zahra slipped in the final goal of the day with 8:08 left in regulation.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick had seven saves in the shutout win for the Panthers. Sandra Palumbo recorded the loss with 10 saves in the first stanza, while Meghan McLaughlin made seven stops in the second half.
Adelphi returns to action next Wendesday, April 14, as they host American International College at 6:30 p.m.
