The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas this afternoon on William J Bonomo Memorial Field. The Panthers scored an early second inning run, which was all they needed, as they defeated the Spartans, 4-0. Adelphi improves to 2-0, while STAC drops to 0-2.
For the Panthers, senior Chris Weidlein went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while freshman Nick Pomo-Roman went 2-for-4. Senior Justin Ciamillo finished the day going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and junior Richard McCarren collected one hit with an RBI and a run scored as well. Junior Robert Nixon picked up the win, going four innings, striking out six and giving up just three hits.
Weidlein left off the second inning with a double and would then advance to third on a fielders's choice. Weidlein would cross home plate for the Panthers' first run on on a double play. Adelphi would pick up two more runs in the fourth inning, the first by McCarren, driving in a run and reaching on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Craig Matteo would score the next Panther run, getting hit by the pitch with the bases loaded. Weidlein would add an insurance run for AU in the seventh with an RBI double, scoring Ciamillo.
For STAC, Andrew Ahn, Matt Smith, Ryan Spicer, and George Wargo each recorded a hit each. Matt Marotta took the loss, throwing three and a third innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out one.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they host the Spartans again in a doubleheader at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field starting at 11:00 a.m.
