Yaphank, N.Y. -

The Adelphi University baseball team opened its season this afternoon at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York against Mercy College. Adelphi used a five-run third inning en route to the 10-1 victory.

"This was a good way to start the season," said Head Coach Dom Scala. "We needed to get going. All the guys were like caged lions and although we scored 10 runs, it was a mentally tough day. The cold can take your attention away and lapses can hurt, but I like our team and thay have worked hard and we are ready to go."

For the Panthers, senior Anthony Anzalone and Justin Ciamillo each went 2-for-5, while Ciamillo added an RBI. Freshman Nick Pomo-Roman had one hit and drove in two runs, while junior Richard McCarren also had one hit and drove in three. Junior Trevor Thorstensen went 3-for-4 on the day with one RBI. Junior Keith Couch earned the win, throwing four innings, striking out seven, and giving up one hit.

Adelphi, who had a 2-0 lead headed into the third inning, erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third. McCarren drove in the first run after drawing a bases loaded walk. A Thorstensen RBI single was then followed by a two-run single from Pomo-Roman.

Sophomore T.J. Humrich's sacrifice fly scored McCarren, which highlighed a two-run fourth inning by the Panthers. Sophomore Justin Farnum delivered a pinch-hit home run to the right-center field gap in the bottom of the eighth to round out the Panthers' offense.

For Mercy, Mike Grassano went 1-for-2 and drove in the lone run. Tony Cummings took the loss, going two innings, giving up five earned runs, and striking out one.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they play host to St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 p.m.
