Second-Half Surge Leads Adelphi Past Merrimack

North Andover, MA - The nationally top-ranked Adelphi women's lacrosse team scored the final eight-goals in the second-half as they defeated Merrimack, 23-12, this afternoon in Northeast-10 action in Andover, Massachusetts. With the victory, Adelphi remains unblemished improving to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in Northeast-10 play, while Merrimack drops to 2-2, 1-2 in league action.

For the Panthers, sophomore Erica Devito scored a game-high of eight goals, tying her career best,to go along with three assists. Freshman Claire Petersen tallied six goals and four assists. The Warriors were led by three goals by Kelly Pasquantonio's three goals and two goals by Mary Pasquantonio.

Adelphi came out firing in the second half extending an 11-8 margin, to a 15-9 lead within the first eight minutes. The Warriors netted three straight goals as their final goal coming from Alicia Tinsley, trimming Adelphi's lead to 15-12 with 15 minutes left to play.

The Panthers got some separation from the Warriors, scoring three times in under a one-minute, putting Adelphi on-top 18-12. In the process, junior Elizabeth Fey's goal was sandwiched in-between a pair of goals by junior Kaitlyn Carter. Fey and Carter each scored three times for the Panthers. From there on, Adelphi put the game out of reach as Devito and Peterson scored in a 15-second span for a 20-12 lead, ultimately defeating the Warriors 23-12.

Petersen led Adelphi with five first-half goals giving Adelphi an 11-8 advantage in intermission. The Warriors Mia Basile opened the scoring at the 1:54 mark of the first half and then the Panthers erupted with three straight goals, two of them by Petersen.

Merrimack tied the contest at 3-3 at the 5:54 mark, as Adelphi went on a 6-1 spurt, stretching their lead to 9-4 with 10 minutes left in the first half. The Warriors would not back down as they ended the half on a 4-2 run as Basile assisted on the final three of Merrimack's four first-half scores.

The Panthers recorded 60 shots in the game; 11 shots each were taken by Kaitlyn Carter, Michele Ceraso, and Devito. Carter and Elizabeth Fey both had three goals in the game. Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded 18 saves in the victory, while her counter-part Jamie-Lee Whiteway tallied 17 saves in the contest.

The 11 points scored by Devito breaks the school record of 10 points in a single game set by Diana Lopez '07 in 2005 and tied by Rachel Ray '09 in 2008 and again in 2009. Katherine Hock '05 still holds the record for most goals in a game with nine.

The Panthers look to remain undefeated as they travel to Waltham, Massachusetts to face-off against Bentley University on Saturday, April 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
