The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Clippers of Concordia College this afternoon in a non-conference contest at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Adelphi scored six runs over three innings en route to the 6-2 victory. The Panthers improve to 15-6, while the Clippers fall to 15-9.
For the Panthers, junior Richard McCarren went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while senior Anthony Anzalone finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Robert Eysel and freshman Nick Pomo-Roman also went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Junior Jonathan Gonzalez got the win, going five innings, giving up four hits and striking out four. Senior Mike Bartlett struck out five in four innings of relief.
Concordia got on the board first in the top of the third when Donnie Roth singled home Tommy Paradise. The Panthers would come back in the bottom half of the inning and answer back with two runs. With the bases loaded, Pomo-Roman and McCarren scored on a throwing error by Clippers' catcher Greg Conway.
In the bottom of the fourth, Pomo-Roman drove in Eysel with a sacrifice fly to center field. Concordia would close the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a Anthony Carnacchio RBI double.
Adelphi would put the game away in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring three runs. McCarren started things off with a single, followed by Anzalone driving him in with an RBI double down the left field line. Anzalone would then steal third and score on a Conway throwing error. Eysel would drive in senior Chris Weidlein for the final run with an RBI single.
The Panthers scattered nine hits and committed just one error, while Concordia collected five hits and had three errors in the field.
For the Clippers, Carnacchio went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Roth finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Matthew Gelormio took the loss, pitching six innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out seven.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to take on Merrimack College in a conference doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
