Couch Tosses Two-Hitter In 5-0 Win Over Assumption

The Adelphi University baseball team hosted the Greyhounds of Assumption College this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. Junior Keith Couch threw a complete game shutout, striking out nine and giving up two hits. Adelphi improves to 14-6 and 3-2 in the Northeast-10, while Assumption drops to 13-9 and 4-3 in the NE-10.

For the Panthers, senior Anthony Anzalone went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while junior Trevor Thorstensen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Junior Richard McCarren also went 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Adelphi got on the board early in the bottom half of the first inning when senior Justin Ciamillo drove in McCarren with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Panthers would add their second run in the next inning when Anzalone drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The game would remain 2-0 in favor of Adelphi headed into the bottom of the sixth. In the inning, the Panthers would produce three more runs. Thorstensen would score on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Craig Matteo. Anzalone would then drive in sophomore Lucas Romeo and Matteo on a two-run double.

The Panthers collected eight hits and had no errors, while Derek Migrants collected the only two hits for Assumption. The Greyhounds also committed five errors defensively.

Joe Piscitelli took the loss, throwing seven innings, giving up eight hits and striking out five.

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday, March 30 when they host Mercy College in a non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
