Game One|Game Two
Hempstead, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University softball team opened its conference schedule by hosting Franklin Pierce University. The Panthers (8-8, 1-1 NE10) split with the Ravens (6-9, 1-1 NE10), taking game one, 4-1, before faltering in game two, 7-4.
Adelphi was led offensively by senior Ashley Vinti who went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with three doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.
Game One
After a quiet first four innings, the Panthers tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vinti doubled, then advanced on a single by senior Rochelle Noren. Senior Katie Brophy's RBI single brought home Vinti and set up Noren to score on a bunt by sophomore Shay Craig. Brophy made it 3-0 on a sac bunt by freshman Amanda Dolan and it was a RBI double by senior Christine Robinson that scored Brophy, 4-0. The Ravens Emily Griffin prevented the shutout when she scored Pratt in seventh inning. But FPU left two runners on as the Panthers held on for the win.
Robinson went the distance to record the win, allowing seven hits while striking out nine. Kayla Johnson took the loss for the Ravens with six hits in four innings pitched.
Adelphi had four runs on eight hits with two errors. Franklin Pierce had one run on seven hits with two errors.
Game Two
A Panther error set up the Ravens to score first, but a Vinti double drove in Craig in the bottom of the inning. However it was two more errors that helped Frankin Pierce pulled ahead in the second inning, taking a 4-1 lead. Freshman Emily Dorko scored in the bottom of the second after reaching on a single, rounding third on a wild pitch with freshman Paige Rhodes credited with the RBI on a ground out to second base, 4-2.
Brophy cleared home plate in the bottom of the third, after reaching on an error, stealing second and scoring on a sac fly by junior Deandra Leo as Adelphi trailed, 4-3. However, the Ravens pulled away, scoring in the fifth and sixth to open the lead, 7-3. Vinti added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Franklin Pierce prevailed.
Jessica Wiley was credited with the win for FPU, pitching four innings with nine hits and three runs scored. Junior Leighann Bell took the loss with three hits and four runs in two innings pitched.
Franklin Pierce had seven runs on seven hits with one error. Adelphi had four runs on 11 hits with four errors.
The Panthers are back in action on Tuesday, March 30, as they travel to Springfield, Massachusetts for a conference doubleheader with American International College. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
