Junior Elizabeth Fey and sophomore Marissa Mills each tallied five goals as the #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team surged to a 24-7 win over Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 action this afternoon at Competition Field. The Panthers improve to 6-0 and 2-0 in the NE10, while the Ravens fall to 2-3 and 0-2.
Mills struck first in the second minute, but the Ravens' Courtney Webber responded to knot the score, 1-1. Junior Michelle Ceraso picked up the first of her four goals in the 6th minute, followed by junior Kaitlyn Carter's solo shot 20 seconds later, 3-1. Webber again scored for FPU at 23:42, 3-2. After an Adelphi timeout, the Panthers rallied on an 11-0 run, capped by Fey combining with Carter to make it 14-2. Adelphi, which blasted 32 shots at the FPU net, held a 15-3 lead at intermission.
Both teams were more even in shots in the second half, with Adelphi taking 14 compared with 12 for Franklin Pierce. However the Panthers found the back of the net nine times, with the Ravens connecting on just four. Senior Holly Burke make it a 17-4 advantage on a feed from freshman Claire Petersen at 19:03. The Ravens managed back to back goals late into the half, but freshman Demmianne Cook stopped the rally with her second goal of the day on an unassisted shot with 7:34 left in regulation. Freshman Sara Sangiorgio had the last word, scoring on an assist from senior Corinne Pingitore with 30 seconds remaining.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick made 11 saves in the win, while freshman Cathryn Bonitz closed out the 5:21 of the contest. Franklin Pierce's Jillian Bolduc made 14 stops.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, April 3, as they travel to Bentley University for an 11:00 a.m. contest.
