New Haven Scores Five In The Ninth To Defeat Adelphi, 8-5

The Adelphi University baseball hosted the 24th-ranked University of New Haven this afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field. The Chargers scored three runs in the eighth inning, followed by five in the ninth to come back and upend the Panthers, 8-5. New Haven improves to 14-3 and 3-1 in the Northeast-10, while Adelphi drops to 13-6 and 2-2 in the league.

For the Panthers, senior Anthony Anzalone went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while classmate Chris Weidlein went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run. Juniors Richard McCarren and Trevor Thorstensen, along with freshman Chris Bozza all collected two hits in the loss. Junior Jonathan Gonzalez threw seven strong innings in the no-decision, giving up five hits and fanning 12.

Anzalone drove in junior Matt Barle in the third inning to score the first Panther run. Anzalone would then start off the sixth inning with a single to left-center, which was then followed up by an RBI-double from senior Justin Ciamillo. Weidlein would then drive in the next two runs on a two-run blast to left-center, giving Adelphi a four-run lead.

New Haven would then score their eight runs in the eighth and ninth inning. Tom Ballaro would drive in the first run with a pinch-hit single to right, driving in Kyle Donnelly. Jordan Kershaw drove in the second Charger run with an RBI-single, followed by a Taylor Candage RBI-single up the middle.

The Chargers would score all five runs in the ninth with two outs. Kershaw delivered a two-run single, giving New Haven their first lead of the game, 6-5. The final two runs came on a pinch-hit two-run double from Jack Heary.

For the Chargers, Kershaw finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while David Wirkus went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mitch Rossi picked up the win, pitching two innings of relief, giving up three hits and striking out one.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, March 27 when they travel to Easton, Massachusetts to take on Stonehill College in a conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
