The #1-ranked Adelphi University women's lacrosse team rolled to a 12-0 first half lead en route to a 20-1 win over Assumption College this afternoon. The Panthers improve to 5-0 and 2-0 in the Northeast-10, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-1 and 0-1.
Junior Michelle Ceraso led the charge with four goals, all coming in the first half. Junior Elizabeth Fey scored first, as sophomore Claire Petersen dished out one of her four assists at 26:36. The Panther riddled the Assumption net with 30 shots as senior Danielle Kafarski made it 10-0 on a feed from Kristina Wargo at 4:22.
Freshman Demmianne Cook tallied the second of her two goals to open the second stanza. Adelphi connected for six goals, including sophomore Tara Gangarossa's unassisted shot with 16:11 remaining, 13-0. Danielle D'Amico prevented the shutout when she scored for the Greyhounds in the 56th minute on an assist from Elaine Bowman. Junior Kaitlyn Carter got on board with 1:46 to go on an assist by sophomore Alison Staudt. A minute later, Staudt made it 20-1 to end the game.
Senior Caitlin Fitzpatrick recorded the win in goal, with five saves. Freshman Cathryn Bonitz guarded the net for 5:37 in relief making one stop. Julie Verbic had 12 saves for Assumption.
The Panthers are back in action next Saturday, March 27, as they host Franklin Pierce at 1:00 p.m.
