The Adelphi University baseball team concluded their spring break trip this evening against Nova Southeastern University. The Panthers were up 6-2 after three innings, but couldn't hang on as the Sharks came back and won, 7-6. The Panthers went 6-1 down in Florida and are 11-3 overall.
For the Panthers, senior Justin Ciamillo went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while freshman Nick Pomo-Roman finished 2-for-4 with a run driven in and scored. Sophomore T.J. Humrich went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior Mike Scudero threw 4.1 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs for the no decision.
Adelphi got out to an early lead after they put up three runs in the top of the first inning. Pomo-Roman would start things off with a single through the left side and would later score on an RBI groud out by senior Chris Weidlein. Ciamillo would then score from third on a passed ball, while Humrich drove a single up the middle, driving in the Panthers' third run.
The Sharks would get two runs back in the second inning off a Luis Penate two-run single down the right field line. Adelphi would respond with three more runs next inning to take a 6-2 lead. The Panthers would get two of the three runs in on two RBI fielder's choice, and the third on Pomo-Roman walk with the bases loaded.
Nova Southeasrtern would then tack on five runs in two innings for the 7-6 win. The three-run fifth inning for the Sharks was highlighted by a Michael Hartley two-run single up the middle. The eventual game-winning run was driven in by Nikko Echevarria.
For the Sharks, Penate finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, while Eric McCans went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Anthony Nalepa got the win, pitching four innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out four.
The Panthers return to action on Friday, March 19 when they host Dominican College (N.Y.) in a non-conference contest at 3:30 pm.
