March 16, 2010

Game One|Game Two

Kissimee, FL - The Adelphi University softball team shutout the University of Bridgeport, 10-0, in five innings before falling to Caldwell College, on day four of the Rebel Games in Kissimee, Florida. The Panthers are now 4-2 on the season.

Game One
In the bottom of the second, Dolan lead off with a walk, as pinch runner Emily Dorko stepped in. She then stole second and third, before advancing to home on a throw that got away from the UB third baseman for Adelphi's first run of the day.

Adelphi scored seven of its ten runs in the third inning. Second baseman Heather Salerno earned a walk and advanced all of the way to third on a bunt single by left fielder Paige Rhodes. With runners on first and third, senior Rochelle Noren laid down a perfect squeeze bunt which allowed a sliding Salerno to beat the toss home. Senior Katie Brophy singled, loading the bases for junior Shay Craig. Craig singled up the middle, allowing Rhodes to cross home plate safely. Both Dolan and Leo walked, bringing in the third and fourth runs of the inning. A Bridgeport pitching change couldn't stop the attack as Canino cleared the bases with a three RBI double.

Noren lead off the fourth inning with her second single of the day. Junior Gina DeTillio advanced Noren to second. In her first collegiate at-bat sophomore Jacqueline Bellairs sent a first pitch strike through the infield for an RBI single. First baseman Deirdre White earned the second RBI of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field, accounting for Adelphi's tenth run.

The game was stopped after 4 1/2 due to the mercy rule.

Junior pitcher Marisa Romeo allowed three hits and one walk, while striking out three in her first outing of the season.

Game Two
Adelphi took a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single by junior Maria Canino. However, the Cougars tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second.

In the top of the third, sophomore Kelly Ryan led off with a single and eventually scored on an error for the go-ahead run. Adelphi threatened in the seventh, as Deandra Leo led off with a double. Freshman Amanda Dolan then singled to left, but pinch runer, Rhodes, was called out at the plate. Freshman pitcher Kourtney Wilson retired the final two batters to end the game and give Caldwell its second win over the Panthers at this year's Rebel Games.

Wilson went the distance to earn the victory, allowing six hits and one run while walking three and striking out six. Christine Robinson lasted five innings and took the loss.

The Panthers will look for redemption over the Caldwell tomorrow as they face them at 3:00 p.m., followed by Minnesota-Moorhead at 5:00 p.m.
