The Adelphi University baseball team took on cross-town and former ECC-rival Molloy College this morning at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. Senior Anthony Anzalone delivered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the ninth to give the Panthers the win. Adelphi is 10-2 and has won six games in a row.
For Adelphi, junior Richard McCarren went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while senior Chris Weidlein went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Sophomore T.J. Humrich also had a fine day going going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Salvatore Persico earned the win, striking out one in one and a third innings of work.
Molloy would get two runs in the top of the first and two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead headed into the bottom half of the third inning. Senior Justin Ciamillo would drive in sophomore Lucas Romeo on with a sacrifice fly for the Panthers' first run of the inning. Freshman Nick Pomo-Roman would score the second run on a Molloy error.
Adelphi would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two more runs. Humrich would score the first run on an error, while McCarren would drive in the second run with a single up the middle.
After the Panthers extended their lead to 7-4 after six, Molloy would get two of those runs back in the top half of the seventh. Carmine Pellechia would drive in Kris Kelly with a single to center, followed by Pellechia scoring on a T.J. Greig single to the left side. A Humrich double in the bottom of the seventh would give Adelphi an 8-6 lead headed into the eight.
Joseph Menendez would lead off the eight inning for Molloy with a single and would then be driven home with a two-run home run from Tom Szenczy, tying the score at 8-8. The Lions would then be shutdown in the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Weidlein got things started with a triple to the left-center field gap. Junior Trevor Thorstensen would come in to pinch run for Weidlein. Anzalone would then drive in Thorstensen from third with a single to left center, giving the Panthers their sixth straight win.
For Molloy, Greig went 5-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI, while Pellechia finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Michael Mongiardo suffered the loss, giving up four hits and one earned run in an inning of work.
The Panthers wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow when they take on Nyack College at 10:30 am at Santaluces Sports Complex in Lantana, Florida, followed by Nova Southeastern University at 6:00 pm in Fort-Lauderdale Davie, Florida.
