The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Albany, New York to take on St. Rose on Tuesday, February 9 in a Northeast-10 clash. Adelphi entered the half deadlocked with St. Rose, but could not gain the advantage, falling 74-70. With the loss the Panthers fall to 16-9 overall and 9-9 in NE-10 play, while the Golden Knights improve to 13-10 overall and 10-8 in conference action.
Casey Cosgrove led the Panthers with 17 points and five assists, while Richard Byrd chipped in 16 points and five rebounds. Chris Diasparra also reached double figures, posting 11 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Adelphi took their largest lead of the half early, as they claimed a six point lead, 8-2, just two minutes into the action on a Rob Johnson jumper. But, St. Rose battled back, finally stealing the lead from the Panthers with 13 minutes left in the action, 15-14. However, Adelphi hung tight, never trailing by more then six, before getting two made free throws from Diasparra with 19 seconds left to send the game into the half locked at 34.
The Panthers sprinted out of the gate in the second half, using a 16-5, run over the first 6:45 of the half to take an 11 point lead. However, the Golden Knights responded with a run of their own, holding Adelphi to just four points, while ripping off 15 in a span of just over five minutes to knot the action at 54.
St. Rose would push the advantage to 10 points, 72-62, with 27 seconds on the clock, but the Panthers kept fighting, getting a John Calarco triple and three made foul shots from Diasparra to cut the margin to four, 72-68. But, it was not enough as Adelphi fell, 74-70.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 13 when they play host to Assumption at 3:30 pm.
