The Adelphi University men's basketball team traveled to Syracuse, New York on Saturday, February 6 for a meeting with Northeast-10, New York rival LeMoyne College. The Panthers found themselves down by three, 43-40 at the half, but could not pull out the win, falling 90-80. With the loss Adelphi falls to 16-8 overall and 9-8 in NE-10 action, while LeMoyne improved to 14-8 overall and 10-7 in
conference play.
Richard Byrd led the Panthers with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Rob Johnson chipped in 18 points. David Akinyooye added 14 points, while Casey Cosgrove also reached double digits with 12.
The Dolphins scored the first seven points of a closely-played first half. However, the Panthers countered with a 12-3 run to take a two-point lead with 14:47 remaining in the stanza. Rob Johnson hit a three-pointer and Akinyooye connected on three jumpers around a Cosgrove triple.
The two teams then traded baskets over the next 4:43, resulting in a 20-20 tie. Ekperigin scored six points in the span for the Dolphins, while Cosgrove and Chris Diasparra each made shots from three-point range for Adelphi.
LeMoyne broke the deadlock with a conventional three-point play and Adelphi would trail the remainder of the half, taking a 43-40 edge into the break. Le Moyne led by as many as five points on a pair of occasions, while Adelphi cut its deficit to a single point six times, but could not regain the advantage.
After Rob Johnson opened the second half with a lay-up, the Dolphins rattled off 10 of the game's next 12 points to take a 53-44 advantage with 17:18 to go. Adelphi answered with an extended run of 23-14 over the next eight and one-half minutes to knot the score at 67 apiece. Byrd scored the first 10 points of the run and 12 total in the streak. Rob Johnson hit two three-pointers in the stretch, the second of which from the right wing tied the score with 8:46 left.
Le Moyne responded by scoring nine straight points to regain control of the game. The Panthers were able to close within five points on three occasions over the next two minutes, but could not get closer.
Adelphi returns to action on Tuesday, February 9 when they travel to Albany, New York for a meeting with St. Rose.
