The Adelphi men's basketball team played host to Pace University on Wednesday, February 3 in Northeast-10 action. The Panthers shot 52 percent for the game, including hitting on 46 percent from behind the three point line to secure a 99-62 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 16-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play, while Pace falls to 9-12 and 7-9 in NE-10 action.
The Panthers were led by Steffon Farley and Richard Byrd. Farley had a monster double-double, scoring 27 points and adding 12 assists to go along with two blocks, while Byrd chipped in 27 points, including a perfect seven for seven from deep and six rebounds. Rob Johnson also reached double figures, adding 14 points, while Richard Harkins handed out a career-high 12 assists.
Adelphi started slow, as the first four minutes of action looked to be the preview of a defensive struggle, as the score was just 4-2, four minutes in. However, a Byrd triple with 15:53 on the clock made the score 5-4 and sent the Panthers on a quick 8-2 run that gave Adelphi a 13-6 lead with 12:46 to play in the half.
Pace kept it close, staying within seven points, 21-14, thanks to a Ryan Woods jumper with 8:32 remaining. Farley answered back for Adelphi with a lay-up just 28 seconds later that sent the Panthers on a 14-4 run that was capped by a Byrd three pointer, giving Adelphi a 35-18 lead with 2:38 to play in the first half. Byrd would give the Panthers a 16 point cushion at the half, courtesy of a tough running jumper with two seconds on the clock.
Adelphi picked up right where they left off in the second half, pushing out to a 25 points lead on another Byrd triple, 51-26, with 16:11 left in the game. Pace battled back, getting the Panther lead under 20 points at 55-36 with 13:21 to play, but Adelphi responded with another run, 16-2, to put the game out of reach at 71-38.
The Panthers would lead by as many as 42 points, 93-51 with 3:40 to play, before coming away with a 37 point, 99-62 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, February 6 when they travel to Syracuse, New York for a 3:30 pm meeting with LeMoyne.
