Sophomore Erica Devito registered six goals and one assist to lead the #1 Adelphi University women's lacrosse team to a 21-6 victory over Belmont Abbey this afternoon. The Panthers improve to 2-0, while the Crusaders fall to 1-1.
The Panthers riddled the Crusaders' net in the first half, rattling off 27 shots, including 13 goals. Divito put Adelphi on the board within 18 seconds of play for her three of the half. Sophomore Marissa Mills made it 3-0 on a free position shot at 20:44 for the first of her five goals of the afternoon. Junior Michelle Ceraso closed out the stanza with back to back goals at 2:02 and 10 seconds, on assists from junior Kaitlyn Carter and Alison Staudt, respectively. Carter would finish with two goals and three assists.
The Crusaders ended the shutout in the 36th minute, as Briana Dignan found the back of the net, 15-1. Both teams traded goals, with Staudt scoring on a feed from Mills with 7:37 remaining. Two minutes later senior Holly Burke followed on a dish from Staudt to push the lead to 20-3. The Crusaders late rally yielded two straight goals before senior Kristina Wargo scored her first goal in a Panther uniform to make it 21-5 in the 59th minute. Amanda Jones snuck in a final goal for Belmont Abbey on a free position shot with 10 seconds remaining.
Senior Cailtin Fitzpatrick made 15 stops to record the win, while freshman Cathryn Bonitz had one save in the final 5:33 of play. Natalie Crenshaw had 13 saves for the Crusaders.
Adelphi takes a two week break before returning to action on Tuesday, March 16, hosting Queens College at 6:00 p.m.
