The Adelphi University men's basketball team held host American International to just five second half field goals en route to a 57-45 victory in first round Northeast-10 conference action. The Panthers improve to 20-10, while the Yellowjackets fall to 14-14.
Junior Ricard Byrd led the Adelphi with 15 points, while junior David Akinyooye and freshman Chris Ranglin chipped in 11 and 10 points, repectively.
AIC took the early lead with Adelphi keeping it close. The game tied four times in the first 12 minutes of play, with the Panthers knotting the score at 14 on a Akinyooye layup at 8:52. Ranglin poured in six straignt points to Adelphi ahead, 16-10 at 5:56. The Yellowjackets stayed in the game, coming to within 1 point twice in the final five minutes, including a Isaiah Wallace three-pointer with 50 second to go, 22-21. Akinyooye's basket plus the foul, gave the Panthers a four-point cushion, 25-21, at intermission.
Adelphi opened the second half with a six point lead, however AIC rallied back to take the lead, 40-39. After two lead changes and two more ties, the Panthers jumped on top for good thanks to senior Steffon Farley, who tallied six of his eight points, 47-42. The Yellowjackets were scoreless from the field down the stretch as the Panthers expanded its lead and cruise to the win.
Wallace led all players with 24 points, with Anthony Thomas pulling down 11 rebounds and eight points.
The Panthers are back in action on Monday, March 1, as they take on #1 seed Stonehill College in the next round of the NE10 playoffs.
