Box Score

Springfield, MA - Despite getting a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds from guard Richard Byrd the Adelphi University men's basketball team fell to American International College, 63-57 on Saturday afternoon at Butova Gymnasium in Springfield, Massachusetts. With the win Yellow Jackets improved to 13-13 overall and 11-10 in the Northeast-10, while the Panthers fell to 18-10 overall and 11-10 in conference play.

Byrd poured in a game-high 24 points with eight boards to lead Adelphi, while Johnson finished with 10 points and five boards. Junior guard David Akinyooye (Elmont, N.Y.) added eight points and 10 boards off the bench.

AIC led for all but the opening two minutes in the first half and took a 35-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. Adelphi opened up the second frame with an 18-6 run that gave the Panthers a 42-41 lead after Byrd converted a three-point play with 9:56 left on the clock.

AIC regained the lead two minutes later on a jumper from sophomore forward Isiah Wallace. However, Adelphi stayed in the game and kept it close down the stretch, down just three after a triple from sophomore guard Rob Johnson made it 60-57 with 26 seconds to go, but that was as close as Adelphi could get the rest of the way as the Yellow Jackets made three of their four free throw attempts in the closing seconds.

Adelphi closes out the regular season and celebrate senior night on Wednesday, February 24 when they play host to the University of New Haven at 5:30 pm.
