The Adelphi University men's basketball team hosted the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University this evening in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. A 36-19 halftime lead was all the Panthers needed as they went on to defeat the Owls, 62-45. Adelphi improves to 18-9 and 11-9 in the NE-10, while Southern Connecticut falls to 2-23 and 1-19 in the league.
For the Panthers, junior Richard Byrd scored a game-high 22 points to go along with seven rebounds and three steals, while senior Steffon Farley netted 17 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and sent back three shots. Senior Chris Diasparra chipped in with 11 points, while fellow senior Casey Cosgrove matched a career-best with 13 assists.
Adelphi jumped out to an early 14-5 lead to open the game capped off by a Chris Ranglin lay-up. The Panthers would then extend their lead to double figues, 19-9, after a three-point play from Byrd. Tobin Carberry would hit two free throws to cut the Panthers' lead to eight, 19-11, but AU would extend to a 12-point lead with 4:31 left in the first half. Adelphi would end the half on a 7-0 run highlighted by a Diasparra 3-pointer. The Panthers shot 47-percent from the field in the first half and held the Owls to shoot just 30-percent.
The Owls would come out of the half and receive a lay-up from Clyde Chapman followed by a free throw from John Mazzarella, only to have Adelphi answer right back and extend their lead to 18, 42-24, with 14:11 left on the clock. After a bucket from Farley with 7:12 left in the game, Southern Connecticut would get to within 13, 50-37, after a lay-up from Brandon Ennis. The Owls would continue to chip away and get the lead to single digits, 53-44, after two free throws from Carberry. Over the next 1:27 Adelphi would double their lead and hold on for the 62-45 victory.
For the Owls, Carberry scored a team-high 21 points, while Andrew Zito chipped in with eight. Clyde Chapman pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, February 20 when they travel to take on American International College at 3:30 p.m.
