The Adelphi University women's basketball team hosted the Greyhounds of Assumption College this afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Contest. A 41-17 halftime deficit was too much for the Panthers as they fell to the Greyhounds, 74-33. Assumption improves to 13-11 and 10-9 in the NE-10, while Adelphi drops to 3-21 and 0-19 in the league.
For the Panthers, freshmen Alexis Williams and Kara Tancredi scored a team-high seven points, while also grabbing five rebounds each. Junior Ashley Caiafa pulled down eight misses in defeat.
Assumption jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back as they never trailed throughout the entire game. With 8:50 left in the first half the Panthers would cut the lead down to eight, 18-10, after a lay-up from sophomore Erika Cottle. Over the next 3:27, the Greyhounds went on a 9-2 run highlighted by a 3-pointer from Molly Griffiths. With 4:29 left on the clock till the half, Assumption went on a 12-3 run to take a 41-17 halftime lead. The Greyhounds shot 49-percent from the field in the first half, while the Panthers shot 24-percent.
The second half was no different as Assumption extended their lead to 30, 47-17, 3:50 into the second half. The Greyhounds would get out to their biggest advantage, 71-28, with 3:36 remaining in regulation. Assumption held the advantage on the glass, 57-28, as well as getting to the free throw line 21 times to Adelphi's 15.
For the Greyhounds, Kelly Meredith led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Griffiths posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Parker chipped in with nine points and four boards.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University at 5:30 p.m.
