Garden City, N.Y. -
The Adelphi University men's basketball team played host to Assumption College on Saturday, February 13 in a Northeast-10 Conference game. The Panthers trailed, 43-39 at the half, but rallied, outscoring the Greyhounds, 34-28 in the second half, pulling out a 73-71 victory. With the win Adelphi improves to 17-9 overall and 10-9 in NE-10 action, while Assumption falls to 11-13 overall and 8-11 in conference.
Chris Diasparra and Richard Byrd both scored a game-high 17 points, while Diasparra added 10 rebounds and Byrd five along with four steals. David Akinyooye and Casey Cosgrove also reached double figures for Adelphi with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Assumption blitzed Adelphi early in the first half, opening the contest by out scoring the Panthers, 29-14 in the first nine minutes of action. However, Adelphi weathered the storm, and responded with a 8-0 run over a span of four minutes to cut the lead to just seven, 29-22, with 7:39 on the clock.
The Greyhounds pushed their advantage back to double digits, 32-22, but Adelphi crept to within three points, 40-37, and two Diasparra made free throws with 2:23 on the clock. Two minutes later it seemed the Panthers would enter the half trailing, 43-37, but a Byrd jumper with just seconds on the clock made the score 43-39 as the horn sounded.
The action was more subdued as the second half of play opened. Assumption scored the first four points of the period, leading 47-39, but a Diasparra lay-up sent the Panthers on a 9-3 run that was capped by a Rob Johnson three-point play, making the score 50-48 with 14:03 to play.
Adelphi then managed their first lead since the opening moments when an Akinyooye lay-up with 12:41 remaining gave the Panthers a two point lead, 52-50. The game became a back and forth affair from there as Adelphi could not extend their lead past five points, taking their final five point edge with 1:31 on the clock, 71-66 on two Byrd free throws.
Assumption would notch the next two points, cutting the lead to three, before an Akinyooye lay-up made the score 72-68. Courtland Bluford responded with a three-point play to cut Adelphi's lead to just one, 72-71. The Greyhounds picked up an Adelphi miss and had the ball with less then 10 ticks left, but Casey Cosgrove drew an offensive foul from Bluford, and followed that up with a made free throw to ice the game and give the Panthers a 73-71 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Wednesday, February 17 when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University at 7:30 pm.
